Sydney Artist LaHi Releases Her Smooth, Yet Energetic New Single 'Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing'
Off the back of releasing her debut EP The Purge earlier in the year, Sydney-based singer-songwriter LaHi did not disappoint with her follow-up single, Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing. The track is a delightful blend of soul, funk, jazz and pop.
The track is full of lush guitar, a tight grooving rhythm section guaranteed to move you, and horn lines that complement the vocal lines perfectly. But apart from the musicianship, the strong, soulful vocals of Laura Higgins (LaHi) take this tune to a whole new level, with both her powerful lead vocal, and soothing harmonies.
Her influences - the likes of Hiatus Kaiyote, Amy Winehouse, and Jack Johnson - are evident, as Higgins blends her signature, striking vocals with upbeat licks and a neo-soul edge, forming an addictive tune that beckons multiple revisits as the song's catchy melodies etch themselves into your brain.
LaHi's lyrics tell the story of her feeling irritated, desire, and remorse.
“It is super close to my heart and based on a trend I’ve noticed of me falling for people in relationships," muses Higgins. "With most of them also having really amazing partners, I felt like such an asshole for even considering their partner. It was borne out of frustration with myself and also the lusting that you can’t really control? I felt like a “wolf in sheep’s clothing” hiding in plain sight while being friends with both partners and feeling guilty the entire time hoping it wouldn’t be spread across my face.”
LaHi accompanies her new release with a clip filmed throughout Covid lockdown. We see a parade of costume changes, and with it a variety of personas construed by the occasional visual nod to the biblical imagery used in the song’s lyrics.
