'Love of Mine' is the Latest In the Lottery of Van Leucia's Genre-Spanning Singles

With each of Van Leucia's new releases comes a lottery for his fans. While many musicians claim versatility, Van Leucia epitomises the concept, switching from electronic operatic symphonies to a jazzy bossa nova number to metal ballads, each new track from the Sydney-based artist managing to touch on new genres and techniques as he ensures that "no corner of the musical spectrum is untouched in his pursuit of creative freedom." It's impossible to predict the direction of each exciting track.

After taking a short hiatus from his solo music career to build his own recording studio, and work with other local and international artists as both an engineer and session musician, Van Leucia is back in the saddle, releasing his latest single, Love of Mine.

The track touches on the impact of the COVID pandemic in his home country of Australia. It encapsulates a state of mind shared by many throughout the pandemic. "Empathy, listening, and taking solance in helplessness," as Leucia explains.

Like many of his previous works, it's difficult to pin Love of Mine to an exact genre. While perhaps not quite a ballad, the pop influences are evident, with backing "woahs" and "ohs" characteristic of the genre giving the track a particular indie flavour.

But it's not quite any of those things. Or perhaps it is? In any case, as nice as it can be to evenly categorise what we know, and what we hear, being able to convey true feelings in a song is something that transcends genre. Unlike most artists, Leucia doesn't draw himself a box to fit into. While that may, in the case of many artists, seem erratic, Leucia's sound is tied together not by a consistent sound, or tones, or genre - but by the quality of his production, his musical prowess, and his qually versatile vocal ability.

Love of Mine is minimalistic, but not lacking. Expertly nesting vocal melodies and harmonies within simple beats and guitar draws attention to the lyrics. Van Leucia's assuredness is comforting, and while he sings to an unknown presence in his life, the words feel personally consoling.

"The opening lyrics, ‘Go on, tell your story again; you’ve got a lot on your mind. I know it won’t help you mend, but I’m gonna give you all my time’ brings the listener into the sombre, yet wholesome feelings that permeate the song." - Van Leucia
