GRIDLOCK Releases Debut Single 'Missed Calls'

City Pop, American Alternative, and a hint of jazz - that's the recipe for GRIDLOCK's debut single, 'Missed Calls.' The track plays homage to the Japanese-American duo's upbringings, taking inspiration from elements of 80's Japanese Pop, as well as modern American alternative tunes.

From the opening piano chords, layered across lo-fi beats, 'Missed Calls' is immediately entrancing. But once the guitar enters the mix, it's evident that GRIDLOCK have created something special. Paired with a funky bassline that unites all aspects of the track, the song takes off, coloured by the combination of live instruments and steady electronic beats that the band calls 'slo-fi disco.'

After writing the tune in their college years, after "struggling with the pressures that came with the overwhelming choices in life," GRIDLOCK has created a unique sound that asserts its subject matter with vivid vocals and lyrics pertaining to feelings of stasis and longing.

The music video, too, is instantly recognisable as an homage to the city pop aesthetic, blending vintage neons and flares with modern day cinematography, style, and flavour. Director Syd Sisante taps into the band's pure energy and delivers a stunning visual journey to accompany the piece.

The New Jersey musician/producer combo has hit the ground running, and we can't wait to see what they come up with next.

Stay up to date with GRIDLOCK via their Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram.
